AirAsia Malaysia (also known as AirAsia Berhad) is the biggest airline in Malaysia, and leading the market for low cost carrier not only in Malaysia but also ASEAN. It travels to 165 destinations in 25 countries, both local flights in Malaysia and international airports in Indonesia, Thailand, and India. In 2010, AirAsia Malaysia and affiliates such as AirAsia Thailand and AirAsia Indonesia reinforced their leadership in the low fare airline market by flying its 100 millionth guest and breaking the RM1 billion profit barrier. Although it operates from various airports in Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Johor Bahru, and Kuching, its main hub is the Kuala Lumpur International Airport – specifically KLIA 2. At the time of its establishment in 1993 AirAsia was owned by the Malaysia-owned company, DRB-HICOM. However, it was eventually bought by the former Time Warner Executive, Tony Fernandes, in 2001 on the iconic price of 1 Euro. Ever since the change of owner, the airline has turnaround and recorded profit as early as 2002. In 2003, AirAsia Malaysia opened a second base at Senai Airport in Johor Baru near Singapore. It also started international flight route to Thailand. Flights to Macau started in June 2004, while Manila and Xiamen in Mainland China started in 2005. More international routes such as Vietnam and Cambodia followed. AirAsia also expanded to other countries such as Thailand with Thai AirAsia and AirAsia Indonesia in 2004. In 2011, AirAsia introduced two hubs, Chiang Mai for AirAsia Thailand and Medan for AirAsia Indonesia. Singapore functions as a virtual hub where AirAsia features among the top 10 airlines in terms of contribution to passenger traffic. Cabin Baggage
The cabin baggage allowance for all passengers (except infants) is two hand baggage that in total weighs 7kg. One cabin baggage must fit in the overhead space in the cabin, so the dimension cannot be more 56cm x 36cm x 23cm. Another baggage (laptop/handbag/small bag) with the dimension of 40cm x 30cm x 10cm that must fit under the seat in front of you.Checked Baggage
As for the checked baggage, unless you purchase either of the Value Pack, Premium Flex, an extra fee for the baggage will be charged. For this service, it is much better to pre-book the baggage allowance to add baggage since it will be cheaper than buying it at the airport. The extra baggage allocation that can be bought are 15kg (only available for domestic flight), 20kg, 25kg, 30kg, and 40kg. Each checked baggage must not exceed 81cm (H) x 119cm (W) x 119 cm (D) and 32kg in weight. Checked baggage weight available online: 15kg / 20kg / subject to occupational health and safety requirements. For the excess baggage, it is much better to pre-book the baggage allowance to add baggage since it will be cheaper than buying it at the airport. The extra baggage allocation that can be bought are 15kg (only available for domestic flight), 20kg, 25kg, 30kg, and 40kg. However, if you are flying from the US, the checked baggage can be bought by the pieces. Either 1 piece that weigh 20kg, or 2 pieces that weigh 20kg each. For the passengers who have purchased the Value Pack, they can also bring a checked allowance that weigh 20kg max without extra charge. Economy Class
There are various choices for AirAsia’s seats that depend on the aircraft that is used for the route. For AirAsia Malaysia, they currently have 19 Airbus A-320. This means that there are two types of seats that the passengers can choose from when they fly with this airline. The Standard Seats have a pitch of 28” and width of 16-17”, while the Hot Seats which are located in the front of the plane and emergency exit rows have 29” pitch and 16-17” width. For seats in row 1, 12, and 14, there is a leg room of 20.3”. Passengers in the Hot Seats can also board first on the plane. All passengers are automatically allocated a seat, but for passengers who purchased the Value Pack, they could also select a seat in the Standard Seats. As for the seat in Hot Seats, the passenger has to purchase it separately.

There are various inflight snacks and hot meals offered in the flight with AirAsia Malaysia, with the price ranging from MYR5 to MYR17. Online check in is available for the passengers on AirAsia’s official website check in page here. AK flight passengers can start checking in 14 days to 1 hour before the scheduled departure time, except for flights departing from China. For flights departing from China, the check in time is 14 days to 2 hours prior to departure. While web check in is available for group bookings with up to 50 passengers and most individuals, some passengers are not allowed for passengers who are pregnant or travelling with infants. For passengers who check in at the airport’s check in counter, there will be an additional fee of RM 20 for domestic Malaysian flights, and RM 30 for some international flights. This fee is charged per passenger per check in. However, this fee is not applied to passengers who have reduced mobility/medical conditions and including those who would need to carry medications on board. Pregnant passengers, unaccompanied minors, and young passengers travelling alone (age 12-16) are also exempted from the charge. Passengers who have arrived at the airport before doing web check-in can also choose to check in using the self check in kiosk that are available in most airports in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and India. Unlike the airport counter check-in, passengers will not be charged to use this service.
