At the time of its establishment in 1993 AirAsia was owned by the Malaysia-owned company, DRB-HICOM. However, it was eventually bought by the former Time Warner Executive, Tony Fernandes, in 2001 on the iconic price of 1 Euro. Ever since the change of owner, the airline has turnaround and recorded profit as early as 2002. In 2003, AirAsia Malaysia opened a second base at Senai Airport in Johor Baru near Singapore. It also started international flight route to Thailand. Flights to Macau started in June 2004, while Manila and Xiamen in Mainland China started in 2005. More international routes such as Vietnam and Cambodia followed. AirAsia also expanded to other countries such as Thailand with Thai AirAsia and AirAsia Indonesia in 2004. In 2011, AirAsia introduced two hubs, Chiang Mai for AirAsia Thailand and Medan for AirAsia Indonesia. Singapore functions as a virtual hub where AirAsia features among the top 10 airlines in terms of contribution to passenger traffic. AirAsia Philippines started in 2012 while AirAsia India started in 2013. The last one is AirAsia Japan in 2014.
